It was a pipedream for those who wished they could also play games on the computers they used for the rest of their lives. Suddenly, the conversation of Mac gaming was back in the air. Was Metal 2 going to usher in a new era of Mac gaming? Would Apple begin to divulge serious resources into pleasing gamers? Unfortunately, the answers are still no — and no.

The strength of the competition is an obvious choice as the force that not only killed Mac gaming, but prevented it from ever standing a chance. As our Steam statistic shows, Windows has always been the PC platform of choice for gamers. Even if every Mac user in the world was a gamer, all million of them, it would be a very small audience compared to the potential audience of active Windows 10 users — about million.
OpenGL was around long before Metal showed up on the scene, and still powers a lot of the games that can be played on a Mac.

In our tests, the game only achieved about 22 frames per second during an internal benchmark at 1, x 1, resolution, on medium settings. The same system hit 66 FPS when we ran the same benchmark on Windows MacOS uses version 4.

Apple is trying to stiff-arm developers into using Metal, but in the process, gamers end up getting the short end of the stick. DirectX is a collection of APIs that Microsoft has built over decades to help developers bring their applications and games into the world of Windows. But can it really be blamed for the death of MacOS gaming? Yet in Windows 10, at the same settings, we saw 74 FPS.
Keep in mind these tests were all conducted on the same machine. According to our results, you will typically see more than double the framerate just by running games in Windows Boot Camp is the quickest and easiest way to get Windows 10 working on a Mac. You end up with a platform that will run your games better, and give you access to them on day one. By clearing the way for Mac users to install Windows, Apple has given gamers an appealing alternative to poorly optimized MacOS ports of popular games, without having to do the work of investing in the future of Mac gaming.

Between the performance differences and release date problems, Apple has given zero reasons for developers or gamers to use MacOS to play games. Metal is engineered to provide near-direct access to the GPU for professionals and iOS games, but it does a poor job competing with DirectX. The second suspect is Boot Camp. Add those up, and it becomes clear that Apple itself is the reason MacOS gaming is dying, and unlikely to ever make a comeback.
There are plenty of reasons why gaming on MacOS is dead, but Apple itself pulled the trigger. WINE, as mentioned in another answer, may give you some success, but in my experience, it is very case-by-case in how well it works. Steam does not make you re-buy games. Once you own it, it is attached to your account for good. You do need to download your games again, though. You might be able to copy the steamapps folder from Windows to Mac, but I don't have experience doing that cross-OS.
It does work reasonably well from Windows to Windows, though. At the very least, it might let you just "validate integrity of game cache" instead of re-downloading from scratch. So if you bought a game for PC you can run it in any of the game's supported operating systems, be it Windows, Linux or OS X which are the only ones who can currently run the Steam client.
They should appear as cute little icons in the right sidebar of the game's store page both in the web browser and the Steam client.

Also, the last time that I checked a year or more ago, admittedly , you could run Steam in Wine or a Wine-wrapper such as CrossOver and play Windows-only games from there. There is at least one exception where you do have to purchase the Mac version separately filthy, disgusting, putrid, greedy CoD franchise but this is very rare. If anyone knows of any others, please comment. Not all games have been ported to Mac.
Clearly, the term PC was used here to differentiate between PC hardware and console hardware. The idea that the poster meant any specific operating system is at odds with the sentence, the paragraph, the post, and the thread. I think you failed to read the post prior to the edit. There are exceptions to this. For example CoD: BlOps has a separate Mac version. Wine actually runs as more of a translator between the instructions in the PC program and the Mac operating system. It basically fools Windows into thinking they are running in a Windows environment, without actually emulating that environment and taking the same performance hit like Parallels does.
Wine has the benefit of a large, open-source community for support as well, which means it will continue to get better and improve compatibility for a lot of games along the way. Speaking of compatibility, not all PC games are going to work with Wine. To find out if the game you want to try to install on your Mac via Wine will work, head over to the Wine HQ website , where they have an entire database full of the games and applications that will work with Wine.
They even have levels of how well these work with Wine, including Platinum, Gold, and Silver levels of compatibility. I chose Guild Wars: All the examples from here on out will be from my own experience installing Wine to play Guild Wars on my Mac Mini
